Guludo-Beach-Lodge

The Lodge is on the mainland, north of Pemba and overlooks a pristine beach – arguably one of the best in Mozambique, and with the wild African bush of the Quirimbas National Park as a back-drop, it enjoys a unique position, as guests can dive on pristine reefs, explore the islands, and the National Park.

The lodge takes pride in the eco sensitive design, and all accommodation is an ingenious blend of luxury, with a mixture of the traditional and contemporary. The accommodation (whether the 3 Tented or 5 Adobe Bandas) overlooks the beach, thus allowing for exquisite sunrises over the neighbouring Rolas Island. The buildings make use of a blend of traditional and cutting-edge technology – which gives the accommodation an exceptionally high environmental integrity, while materials have been kept local.

The Tented accommodation is open, with netted walls. The bedroom area is raised to allow for excellent views, and makes the most of the cooling sea breezes. The tent is large, and beautifully furnished, and the en suite marbled bathroom is alfresco, and hot water is delivered twice daily.

Each of the Adobe Bandas has a high roof, which also enables the spacious veranda (which houses a hammock and sun loungers) to be sheltered. The bedroom is also raised, and has a king-size bed, under a hand-crafted mosquito net. The bathroom boasts twin sinks, and an over-sized shower. The toilet is positioned to the side, and up a short staircase, allowing for a great view of the surrounds.

As the Lodge is also increasingly popular with honeymooners, there is a newly built, spacious Honeymoon suite. As Guludo is also great for a family getaway, there is a family unit comprising 2 adjoining Bandas, and there is accommodation for 2 adults and up to 3 children.

With the emphasis on sea-food, Guludo prides itself on freshly caught kingfish, tuna, prawns and lobster – you can see the local fishermen sell their catch, following which you can discuss the evening menu with the chef. The cuisine has a European base, with a fresh, local twist.

Although there is the temptation to just relax on your veranda, Guludo has a lot to offer in terms of activities. There is excellent diving on the reefs of the Quirimbas Archipelago, and from July to November you have the chance of seeing magnificent humpback whales. You might choose a visit to Rolas Island, with its reefs (perfect for snorkelling). You can also get to meet some of the local fishermen who use the island as a temporary base, and will get to see some of the islands coconut crabs. Guests can also enjoy a visit to the nearby, historically interesting island of Ibo, home to an ancient Portuguese fort, and some very talented silversmiths.

Staying on the mainland, you can enjoy sundowners at Elephant lookout, which gives you exceptional views of the Quirimbas National Park, and the chance of seeing some elephants, in addition to antelope, warthogs and monkeys. To the south of the Lodge, there are extensive mangrove forests, which you can explore with your guide, in a traditional canoe. There are also guided bush walks which wend through the old coconut plantation, wetlands and forest.

There is also the opportunity of visiting Guludo Village, where life is still very traditional, and you get to meet the local community. Here you can also learn about the local weaving, and the projects that the Lodge is involved in.

At the lodge, you might want to try the traditional face mask, hair braiding and local-style massage, before enjoying a sunset cruise in a locally made dhow.
