Day 3

4 x Nights at Footsteps in a twin tent with private en-suite facilities (bucket shower and bush toilet). Accommodation includes all meals, activities, park fees, laundry, medical evacuation insurance and local beverages.

At Footsteps Across the Delta you enter one of the great, untamed regions of Africa, the spectacular Okavango Delta, and experience the astonishing contrasts created when the mighty Okavango River flows into the arid Kalahari Desert. The result is a variety of habitats, riverine forest, palm islands, permanent swamps and dry sandveld all with an unparalleled wealth of animal diversity. This Ker & Downey Botswana program maintains the elegance and eccentricity of the original 'African Safari under canvas'.

The emphasis is on exploring this breathtakingly beautiful and diverse environment as the first African explorer's did, either by mekoro or on foot. The Footsteps Across the Delta base is a comfortable private camp which accommodates guests in three specially designed twin bedded tents with sewn-in floors. Each tent has its own bucket shower and bush toilet, and even a daily laundry service. The 'bush kitchen' run by our chef, prepares menus to whet all appetites.

The Footsteps Across the Delta offers the highlight of a 'true safari' experience. No special training is required, as distances travelled resemble those of early days, where the emphasis is on exploration and discovery - each morning tracking fresh spoor to reveal the night's events. Other possible activities include game-drives, mekoro trips or fishing, which vary throughout the year. The Footsteps Across the Delta walking experience combines well with the luxuries offered by either Shinde or Kanana.

• Footsteps Across the Delta offers a personal safari experience, hosting a maximum of 6 guests at a time, making it an ideal option for small groups of friends or family.
• The emphasis on your stay at Footsteps is on guided walks where you have the time to focus on learning about tracking wildlife and understanding animal movement, patterns and behaviour, as well as more in depth information on trees, grasses and the finer details. Being on foot instead of in a vehicle affords this unique perspective.
• Footsteps Camp is the base of our Young Explorer's Delta packages, which is a family safari led by a specialist guide that tailors the safari to suit children as young as 7 years old.

Day 7
This morning you will be transferred by light aircraft to Delta Camp. On arrival you will be welcomed by the Camp Managers and shown to your room. You will be accommodated in an East Africa style walk in Meru Tent with private en-suite facilities. Enjoy a leisurely buffet lunch and a little later this afternoon your guide will take you on a Mokoro excursion where you explore the channels which have excellent birdlife. There is also a chance of seeing Hippo, Elephant and Crocodile as well as numerous antelope species. While on your activity enjoy sundowners while in the Mokoro and watch the sun sizzles as it sets on the waterways. Return to the camp in time to freshen up before a delicious dinner accompanied by the sounds of the African bush.

Day 8
An early morning wake-up call, some tea, coffee and biscuits, and then accompanied by your Guide you go out on a walking safari - really the ONLY way to go out on safari, on foot, accompanied by a man whose knowledge of the Okavango and its wildlife and plants will astound you. You can, in all safety track and stalk animals that you are particularly interested in seeing, a truly remarkable experience. After a leisurely three hour walk, conducted at your pace, you will return to Delta Camp for a hearty Brunch and a rest during the heat of the day. A little later this afternoon enjoy another Mokoro excursion returning to the camp by sunset. Enjoy a leisurely dinner.

Xugana Lagoon is in the permanent Delta, a world of crystal clear waterways winding through vast reed and papyrus beds, opening unexpectedly onto tranquil lagoons. Xugana Island Lodge Location "kneel down to drink". Xugana Lagoon has, for thousands of years, been a safe haven for the Bushman people who hunted this pristine water world. Xugana Lagoon is in the permanent Delta, a world of crystal clear waterways winding through vast reed and papyrus beds, opening unexpectedly onto tranquil lagoons, home to bream, catfish and the fighting tiger-fish and fringed by secret wooded islands, haven for the magnificent bird and wildlife that inhabit the Delta.

Xugana Island Lodge Attractions
Xugana Lagoon is widely accepted as being the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta. Xugana Island Lodge, situated on a wooded island abutting the lagoon, takes full advantage of this magnificent site. The thatched common area, comprising cocktail bar, lounge and curio shop, is still the original building put up in 1974, when Xugana became only the second tourist lodge ever built in the Okavango Delta. Meals, for which the lodge is justly famous, are taken alfresco on the edge of the lagoon, except on those rare occasions of rain when the lounge doubles as the dining-room. Tea is often served in the garden inside the island, where quiet, secluded reading benches can also be found.

Xugana Island Lodge Facilities
The lodge accommodates a maximum of 16 guests in raised reed and thatch "Mesasas" situated on the shaded fringe of the island, each with a lagoon view through the artfully cleared lagoon-side vegetation. The tastefully decorated "Mesasas" have twin or double beds, en-suite facilities, ceiling fan and a private deck.

Xugana Island Lodge Additional Information
Mokoro trips in eco-friendly dugout canoes built to the traditional design, boat safaris to lagoons and islands and wilderness walks give guests the chance to see the Delta denizens such as sitatunga and lechwe antelope, crocodile and hippo, as well as the other big game that frequents the islands and riverine fringes. Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding, and the bream and tiger fishing can be excellent at certain times of the year. The peaceful boat ride back across Xugana Lagoon during the spectacular African sunset provides a lifelong memory. All activities are conducted by our experienced naturalist guides, who, as well as ensuring that guests come to no harm, are keen to impart their vast knowledge and love of this unique area.
