Kwara Camp - Okavango Delta

Kwara is located in the remote northern part of the stunning Okavango Delta within the private Kwara concession.

The camp fronts onto a huge floodplain, adjacent to the permanent water of the Delta and is backed by extensive bush. It is a magnificent wilderness area in excess of 1,700 square kilometres, bordering the Moremi Reserve.

Kwara has 8 luxury safari-style tents are built on raised decks, within a grove of huge and ancient African Ebony trees. Resident hippos will generally serenade you year round from the water on the floodplain in front of the camp. Each tent has its own viewing deck, private en-suite facilities including hot and cold running showers, flush toilets and modern amenities.

Kwara also boast a honeymoon suite with its own special bathroom with an antique slipper bath with the traditional ball and claw feet. Hire a private vehicle and have the wilderness almost to your selves – enhanced by your own guide and tracker who will cater to your interests unobtrusively.

Michelle suggested Kwara for the Delta, which was a good choice for us since we were coming from the Masai Mara in Kenya. It was more remote than what we were used to but it offered us a very different experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic in explaining anything from wildlife to the constellations. Unlike the Mara, the animals at the Delta were a little harder to come by but the hot porridge at the crack of dawn and driving out to the sunrises and sunsets, made up for the absence of game. The boat ride to see the hippos was great. One caveat, the boat broke down after sunset (from lack of use or servicing) but the guide got it working again after many attempts and since the light on the boat was busted too, he expertly manoeuvred around the river in the dark! Thank God he had x-ray vision or we would be stuck out there with the crocs!

Kwara Camp itself was intimate, quiet, basic and comfortable. It had the rustic feeling of real 'camping'. The dinners were excellent although I did take a bite into one of the chicken skewers at tea time and realized that it wasn't cooked through! I stuck to crackers after that. In any case, the people who worked there were pleasant. At the time that we were there, there was a changeover in the camp management and we got to meet the new camp managers. The camp gave us a surpise present for our honeymoon which was very thoughtful and sweet. :)
