Elephant Back Safari
Breakfast, Lunch or Sunset cruise on the Zambezi River
After breakfast and some more leisure time at the Kingdom Hotel, a representative of Falcon Safaris will collect you from the Hotel at 10h00, and they will transfer you across the border, into Botswana, and on to Chobe Mowana Lodge. This transfer will take approximately 1 hour.
Situated on the banks of the mighty Chobe River lies Mowana Safari Lodge. In this tranquil bush setting you will experience true comfort, superb accommodation, fine cuisine, and excellent personalized service.
Mowana Safari Lodge is the perfect setting for any Southern African safari experience. Mowana is the ideal base for wildlife, bird and safari enthusiasts, with its unique bush and river surroundings.
Chobe National Park is home to huge herds of Elephant, Buffalo, and Plains Zebra and high densities of predators such as Lion, Leopard, Spotted Hyena and Cheetah. The park is also notable for the presence of more unusual antelope species like Roan and Sable, Puku, Tsessebe, Eland, Red Lechwe, Waterbuck, and the rare Chobe Bushbuck. Other more popular species such as Giraffe, Kudu, Warthog, Wildebeest and Impala also abound.
Chobe has an amazing variety of habitats, ranging from floodplains, baobab, and mopane trees and acacia woodlands, to verdant flood grasslands and thickets bordering the Chobe River. Flowing along the park's northern boundaries are the Linyanti and Chobe Rivers, while in the south the Savuti Channel brings life to the Mababe Depression. Over and above the elephants, the Chobe National Park has an amazing variety of game, and many brilliantly coloured birds.
Set on the tree-lined banks of the magnificent Chobe River, this luxury safari lodge offers every facility for a magnificent wilderness holiday. The lodge has an atmosphere of rustic elegance with its rich yellow thatch buildings. "Mowana" means "Great Baobab" in Setswana - and this is what inspired the design of this beautiful lodge. The entire reception is built around the massive trunk of an ancient Baobab tree.
All the rooms and suites have en suite facilities and balconies with breathtaking views over the river. Coir matting on the floors; woven basket matting on every bedroom wall; individually hand-painted basins; russet brown Mukwa timbers throughout create all the luxury you could ask for complemented by the ambiance and privacy of an African bush lodge.
The Lodge has a landscaped swimming pool where guests can cool down after an exhilarating day of game viewing, and a restaurant which serves gourmet lunches and dinners, and hearty breakfasts.
Mowana is only 8km from the famous Chobe National Park. Game drives into this spectacular area are organized daily. Guests are likely to see elephant, buffalo as well as hippo basking in the river.
Aside from regular game viewing drives, the Lodge offers game viewing by boat, interesting and extensive nature walks, and relaxing sun downer cruises.
Once game viewing is over, it is time to relax in the Savuti Bar overlooking the river, or to enjoy fine wines and cuisine served at the beautiful Serondella Restaurant. After dinner, guests sit around an open fire with an orchestra of crickets as background music, sampling the unique sound of Africa and sharing tales over a welcome nightcap.
Mowana prides itself on its personalised service and variety of luxury facilities. It offers its guests an opportunity to experience the very best in nature with the very best in hospitality.
After breakfast at Mowana Lodge, a representative of the Lodge will transfer you to Kasane Airport (20 minutes) in time to connect with your light aircraft flight into Pom Pom Camp, 80 minutes away across the Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta.
On arrival at the Pom Pom airstrip the Guide who will be looking after you during your stay there will meet you.
Pom Pom Camp is located on Pom Pom Island, in a private concession situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta, and on the headwaters of the Xudum River system. The area lies on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve and offers superb Okavango scenery and a true Okavango wilderness experience. This is a safari camp built and designed in the style of safari camps of old, overlooking a scenic lagoon and under a grove of shady trees. This is a camp for the safari traditionalist.
Pom Pom has nine large walk-in tents (18 beds), in true traditional safari style, all with full en-suite facilities, flush toilets and semi open showers, - for a true bush experience! The main building is attractively designed and constructed of thatch and canvas and comprises lounge, dining, and bar area, as well as a gift shop and the boma pool.
There are battery-operated lights in the rooms, and battery charging can be done in the main building. At night, paraffin lamps give a wonderfully warm atmosphere.
Depending on your arrival time in camp, a lunch will be served. You will then have time for a little relaxation before your afternoon / evening activity. Following the afternoon tea, you will depart on a game drive in an open 4x4 Land Cruiser, stopping for a break and a traditional Botswana "Sun downer". Hippo and crocodile are found in the deeper lagoons in the area. Birding enthusiasts will enjoy sighting Pel's fishing owl, African fish eagle, giant eagle owl and white backed vultures.
You will return to camp in the dark, using a spotlight to hunt for nocturnal species. Night drives provide an opportunity to see nocturnal sightings of leopard, springhares, genets and other small cat species if you are very lucky. After the drive, you will enjoy an outdoor dinner overlooking the Okavango, and share the evening with the others in the group around the campfire.
Days 6 and 7
Enjoy a light breakfast of cereals, yoghurt, muffins, fresh fruit, and a bracing cup of coffee or tea, you will explore the delta in the traditional way. Poled silently, the mokoro glides gently through the waterways, parting dense reed beds with perfect stealth so that animals and birds are caught totally unaware. The focus is on finding tiny reed frogs, jacana eggs, looking at flowers and the amazing variety of bird-life that is the essence of the Okavango Delta. You will stop on an island for a Tea Break and a short nature walk, before returning to camp for a hearty brunch. Like most of the animals, you will have siesta time through the heat of the day, so bring your swimsuits and enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool.
Morning activities are mokoro excursions, early game drives, or nature walks. Afternoon game drives start after tea, and return to camp after dark. Seasonal fishing and motorboat excursions are also offered depending on water levels.
After a light breakfast and an early morning activity and brunch, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your charter from Pom Pom Camp to Maun Airport (20 minutes), where you will connect with Air Botswana, flight BP211, departing Maun at 14h50, and arriving back in Johannesburg at 16h30.
